This is my primary match ammo for shotgun — both mag-fed and tube guns. Federal developed it with Dissident Arms specifically for competition shotguns, and after running it across multiple seasons of 3-Gun and Tactical Games events, I haven’t gone back.
The roll crimp is the big deal here. It makes the hull rigid enough to cycle reliably through box-magazine shotguns where star-crimped shells can deform and cause feeding issues. But the payoff extends to tube guns too — the stiff hull and smooth surface load faster and more consistently when you’re running dual and quad loads under time pressure. Fewer yard sales at the loading port.
The 1-1/8 oz payload of #7.5 shot at 1,235 fps hits the sweet spot between reliable target knockdowns and manageable recoil. The plated steel head feeds and extracts cleanly.
Two things to know before you buy. First, it ships as a 200-round bulk case — loose packed, not in boxes of 25. That’s different from the 250-round cases you’re used to with Winchester AA or other target loads, so plan your match round counts accordingly. Second, the per-round cost runs higher than standard target loads like AA’s. You’re paying more for the roll crimp and competition-specific engineering. Whether that premium is worth it depends on how much your shotgun setup punishes inconsistent ammo.

Federal Action Shotgun is a 12-gauge competition shotshell built specifically for the demands of action shooting sports. Developed in collaboration with Dissident Arms and competitive shooters, it addresses the reliability problems that standard target loads create in magazine-fed shotguns while also improving performance in traditional tube-fed guns.
The defining feature is the roll crimp. Unlike the star (fold) crimp found on standard target shells, the roll crimp produces a rigid hull that resists the deformation that causes feeding failures in box-magazine shotguns. For tube-fed guns, the rigid hull and smooth surface result in faster, more consistent loading during dual and quad load sequences.
The payload is 1-1/8 oz of #7.5 lead shot pushed at 1,235 fps — enough velocity for reliable knockdowns on steel and clays without excessive recoil. The plated steel head is harder than standard brass heads, which helps with consistent feeding and cleaner extraction across extended round counts.
This ammunition ships as a 200-round loose-packed bulk case. That’s 200 rounds total, not 10 boxes of 25 — plan your match logistics accordingly, as most other 12-gauge target loads ship in 250-round cases (10×25). The 200-round count does align well with typical major match shotgun round requirements.
Federal currently offers one configuration in the Action Shotgun line: 2-3/4″, 1-1/8 oz, #7.5 shot at 1,235 fps. No other shot sizes or payloads are available at this time.
