30-Day Off-Season Dry Fire Program

2-Gun Competition Preparation (PCSL / Tac2Gun)

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Philosophy

This program is built on a single principle: quality repetitions create permanent skill.

Every major competitive shooter attributes their success primarily to dry fire practice. The reason is simple: dry fire removes ammunition cost, range availability, and noise concerns, allowing you to perform hundreds of perfect repetitions in the time it takes to shoot one live fire session.

This 30-day program will transform your weapon handling from conscious effort to automatic response. By the end, you won’t think about your draw, your reload, or your transition—you’ll simply execute.

The 80/20 Rule of Competition Shooting

Elite competitors spend 80-90% of their practice time in dry fire. Live fire validates technique; dry fire builds it. This program follows that model.

What This Program Will Deliver

By Day 30, you will have:

  • A consistent, competition-speed pistol draw
  • Fluid rifle presentation from ready positions
  • Reliable emergency and speed reloads on both platforms
  • Smooth rifle-to-pistol and pistol-to-rifle transitions
  • Confidence in positional shooting fundamentals
  • Measurable benchmarks proving your improvement

Equipment Required

Pistol

  • Competition pistol (verified UNLOADED)
  • Holster (competition rig you’ll use in matches)
  • 2 magazines (inert/empty)
  • Snap caps or dummy rounds (5-10 recommended)

Rifle

  • Competition rifle (verified UNLOADED)
  • Sling (configured as you’ll run it in matches)
  • 2 magazines (inert/empty)
  • Snap caps or dummy rounds (5-10 recommended)

Training Aids

  • Shot timer OR timer app (free options: IPSC Shot Timer, Split Time)
  • Scaled targets (provided in appendix) OR 3×5 index cards + paper plates
  • Blue painter’s tape (for marking positions/barricades)
  • Dry-erase marker (for tracking on laminated log sheets)

Training Space

  • 10-15 feet of clear space minimum
  • Safe direction for aiming (no live ammunition in room)
  • Optional: doorframe or vertical surface for barricade simulation

Safety Protocol

Complete this checklist before EVERY session:

☐ Remove ALL live ammunition from the training area ☐ Visually inspect chamber – EMPTY ☐ Physically inspect chamber – EMPTY
☐ Visually inspect magazine well – EMPTY ☐ Announce “This weapon is clear” out loud ☐ Identify a safe direction for all dry fire (capable of stopping a negligent discharge) ☐ Commit: “I will not answer the door, phone, or leave this space with my firearm until training is complete”

After EVERY session: ☐ Announce “Dry fire training complete” ☐ Store firearms before reintroducing any ammunition to the space

How to Use This Program

Daily Session Structure

Standard Session (30 minutes)

  • Warm-Up: 5 minutes
  • Skill Block A: 10 minutes
  • Skill Block B: 10 minutes
  • Integration/Cool-Down: 5 minutes

Condensed Session (15 minutes)

  • Warm-Up: 3 minutes
  • Primary Skill Focus: 9 minutes
  • Cool-Down: 3 minutes

Each day designates which skill blocks to prioritize. On condensed days, focus only on the PRIMARY skill listed.

Working With Par Times

This program uses three skill tiers:

TierDescriptionWho This IsDEVELOPINGBuilding foundationsNew to competition, less than 1 year of matchesINTERMEDIATERefining speed1-3 years competing, consistent mid-pack finisherADVANCEDPolishing for podium3+ years competing, regularly finishing top third

Start where you are, not where you want to be. Beginning at DEVELOPING tier and progressing is far more effective than failing ADVANCED times and ingraining frustration.

The Par Time Method

  1. Set your timer to the par time for your tier
  2. Attempt the drill
  3. If you beat the par with proper execution: move to the next rep
  4. If you miss the par OR execute poorly: reset and try again
  5. After 10 good reps, you own that par time

Progression Rule: When you can hit a par time 8/10 reps with proper form, drop the par by 0.1 seconds.

Initial Skills Assessment

My Starting Tier: ________________

WEEK 1: FOUNDATION

Building the Blocks

Theme: Isolate and perfect individual skills. No combinations yet—just flawless repetitions of single elements.

Platform Focus: Pistol primary (Days 1-3), Rifle primary (Days 4-5), Combined assessment (Days 6-7)

DAY 1: Pistol — The Draw

Concept

The draw is the most performed skill in competition. A consistent, efficient draw stroke becomes the foundation everything else builds upon. Today we break it into segments before running it complete.

Warm-Up (5 min)

Wall Drill — Trigger Isolation

  • Face a wall at arm’s length, pistol at extension
  • Focus on a small point on the wall (tape or mark)
  • Press trigger straight back without disturbing sights
  • 20 reps, both hands on gun
  • 5 reps, strong hand only
  • 5 reps, support hand only

Focus: Front sight should not move when trigger breaks

Skill Block A: Draw Segments (10 min)

Drill 1: Grip Acquisition (No timer)

  • Hands relaxed at sides
  • On self-command, establish firing grip on holstered pistol
  • Confirm: web of hand high on backstrap, all fingers wrapped, trigger finger indexed on frame
  • 15 reps — SLOW, perfect each time

Drill 2: Grip to Clear (No timer)

  • Hands relaxed at sides
  • Establish grip, defeat retention, clear holster straight up
  • Pistol should clear holster with muzzle pointed at ground
  • 15 reps — focus on efficiency, no wasted motion

Drill 3: Clear to Extension

  • Begin with pistol cleared from holster, held at chest
  • Drive pistol straight toward target, arms extending
  • Sights should rise naturally into your eye line
  • 15 reps — the gun comes to your eyes, not eyes to the gun

Skill Block B: Complete Draw (10 min)

Drill 4: Draw to First Shot

TierPar TimeTargetDEVELOPING2.0sFull-sizeINTERMEDIATE1.5sFull-sizeADVANCED1.1s1/3 scale
  • Hands relaxed at sides
  • On buzzer: draw, present, dry fire when sights are on target
  • 10 quality reps at your tier’s par time

Self-Check Points:

  • Grip established before pistol moves
  • Pistol travels in straight line to target
  • Trigger finger enters guard only when on target
  • Sights are aligned when trigger breaks (not after)

Integration (5 min)

Drill 5: Cadence Draws

  • Set par time 0.5s LONGER than your tier
  • Perform 5 draws focusing on smoothness over speed
  • “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast”
  • These should feel easy and controlled

DAY 1 — CONDENSED (15 min)

Warm-Up (3 min): Wall Drill — 15 reps both hands, 5 reps each single hand

Primary Focus (9 min): Complete Draw

  • 5 reps at par +0.5s (smooth)
  • 10 reps at par time
  • 5 reps attempting par -0.1s

Cool-Down (3 min): 5 perfect slow draws, no timer

DAY 2: Pistol — The Reload

Concept

Reloads happen under pressure when you’ve run the gun empty or need to top off before a position. Today builds the emergency reload (slide lock) and introduces the speed reload (round in chamber).

Warm-Up (5 min)

Confirm Grip Drill

  • Draw to extension, hold for 2-count
  • Verify grip checkpoints: high tang, thumbs forward, support hand pressure
  • Return to holster
  • 10 reps — each draw should produce identical grip

Skill Block A: Emergency Reload (10 min)

The Emergency Reload happens when the slide locks back on an empty magazine. It’s the most common reload in competition.

Drill 1: Magazine Acquisition (No timer)

  • Stand with hands at sides
  • On self-command, retrieve spare magazine from belt
  • Confirm: index finger along front of magazine, rounds facing forward
  • 15 reps each hand position you carry magazines

Drill 2: Reload Path

  • Pistol at extension, slide locked back, empty mag in gun
  • On self-command: drop mag, retrieve spare, insert, release slide
  • NO timer — perfect the economy of motion
  • Magazine goes directly to mag well, no looping or extra movements
  • 15 reps

Drill 3: Emergency Reload (Timed)

TierPar TimeDEVELOPING3.5sINTERMEDIATE2.5sADVANCED1.8s
  • Pistol at extension, slide locked, empty mag in gun, spare on belt
  • On buzzer: complete reload, dry fire one shot
  • 10 quality reps

Skill Block B: Speed Reload (10 min)

The Speed Reload occurs with a round still in chamber — you’re topping off, not recovering from empty.

Drill 4: Speed Reload Mechanics

  • Pistol at extension, slide forward, empty mag in gun
  • On self-command: drop mag, retrieve spare, insert, return to target
  • Note: no slide manipulation needed — round is chambered
  • 15 reps, no timer

Drill 5: Speed Reload (Timed)

DAY 3: Pistol — Target Transitions

Concept

Multi-gun stages rarely have single targets. Moving your sights efficiently between targets—without overshooting or undershooting—separates fast shooters from merely competent ones.

Warm-Up (5 min)

Draw to Ready Review

  • 10 draws to extension, confirming sight alignment
  • Focus: sights aligned the moment you achieve extension, not after

Skill Block A: Transition Mechanics (10 min)

Target Setup: Place two targets (or marks) 2-3 feet apart at 5-7 yards. If using paper, a 6″ paper plate or 1/3 USPSA works well.

Drill 1: Transition — No Shots

  • At extension on Target 1
  • On self-command, move sights to Target 2
  • Hold, verify sights centered
  • Return to Target 1
  • 20 reps — focus on sights stopping on target, not past it

Drill 2: Single Transitions (Timed)

TierPar TimeDEVELOPING0.7sINTERMEDIATE0.5sADVANCED0.35s
  • At extension on Target 1
  • On buzzer: transition to Target 2, dry fire
  • 10 reps

Key Insight: Move the gun with your whole upper body, not just your arms. Your arms stay locked relative to your torso — your core rotates.

Skill Block B: Transitions with Shots (10 min)

Drill 3: 1-1 Transition

TierPar TimeDEVELOPING1.5sINTERMEDIATE1.0sADVANCED0.7s

  • At extension on Target 1
  • On buzzer: dry fire twice, transition, dry fire twice
  • 10 reps
  • Note: Splits between shots on same target should be faster than transitions

Drill 5: Draw to Transition

TierPar TimeDEVELOPING3.5sINTERMEDIATE2.5sADVANCED1.8s
  • From holster
  • On buzzer: draw, fire T1, transition, fire T2
  • 10 reps

Integration (5 min)

Drill 6: Variable Transitions

  • Set up 3 targets (or marks) in a row
  • From holster: engage each target once, left to right
  • Then holster; engage right to left
  • 3 reps each direction, no par time — focus on consistency

DAY 3 — CONDENSED (15 min)

Warm-Up (3 min): Draw to extension — 8 reps

Primary Focus (9 min): 1-1 Transition Drill

  • 5 reps slow, no timer
  • 10 reps at par
  • 5 reps from draw (par +1.5s)

DAY 4: Rifle — Presentation & Ready Positions

Concept

Competition rifle work requires fast, consistent presentation from various ready positions. Today builds the mount, establishes cheek weld, and develops the “ready-up” skill that transfers to every stage.

Warm-Up (5 min)

Rifle Familiarization

  • With rifle slung, practice adjusting sling length
  • Confirm sling allows quick shoulder and doesn’t bind arm movement
  • Mount rifle 10 times, checking: buttstock pocket in shoulder, cheek weld consistent, sights naturally aligned with eye
  • Each mount should feel identical

Skill Block A: Ready Positions (10 min)

High Ready: Muzzle elevated 45°, buttstock against shoulder or just below, rifle compressed toward body

Low Ready: Muzzle depressed 45°, buttstock in shoulder, rifle compressed

Drill 1: High Ready Mount

  • Rifle at high ready
  • On self-command: drive muzzle to target, disengage safety, acquire sights
  • 15 reps, no timer
  • Focus: the rifle rocks into position, muzzle drops as stock rises

Drill 2: Low Ready Mount

  • Rifle at low ready
  • On self-command: raise muzzle to target, disengage safety, acquire sights
  • 15 reps, no timer
  • Focus: smooth, level lift — don’t overshoot target height

Drill 3: Eyes-Closed Kinesthetic Alignment

  • Rifle at low ready, eyes open
  • Close eyes
  • Mount rifle to shoulder
  • Open eyes — sights should be on target
  • If not, adjust body position (not head position) and repeat
  • 10 reps
  • This builds proprioceptive awareness of proper mount

Skill Block B: Ready-Up Timed (10 min)

Drill 4: High Ready to Shot

TierPar TimeDEVELOPING1.5sINTERMEDIATE1.1sADVANCED0.8s

DAY 5: Rifle — Reloads

Concept

Rifle reloads require different mechanics than pistol — the magazine well is in a different location relative to your eyes, the bolt release/charging handle adds steps, and the weapon’s mass demands more deliberate motion. Today builds both emergency and speed reloads.

Warm-Up (5 min)

Ready-Up Review

  • 5 reps high ready to shot (no par)
  • 5 reps low ready to shot (no par)
  • Confirm mounting feels automatic

Skill Block A: Emergency Reload (10 min)

Drill 1: Magazine Retrieval

  • Standing, rifle slung
  • On self-command, retrieve rifle magazine from pouch
  • Confirm: thumb on top of magazine, rounds facing forward, index along front rib
  • 15 reps
  • Consistency in magazine grip = consistency in insertion

Drill 2: Reload Path

  • Rifle at shoulder, bolt locked, empty mag in gun
  • On self-command: press mag release (catching mag optional), retrieve spare, insert, send bolt forward
  • 15 reps, no timer
  • Focus: magazine travels directly to mag well, no looping motion

Drill 3: Emergency Reload (Timed)

TierPar TimeDEVELOPING4.0sINTERMEDIATE3.0sADVANCED2.2s

WEEK 2: BUILDING SPEED

Pressure and Complexity

Theme: Now that mechanics are established, we add speed pressure and begin combining skills into match-realistic sequences.

Platform Focus: Alternating days, increasing complexity

DAY 8: Pistol — Speed Building

Concept

With foundational mechanics from Week 1, we now push par times and add shot-to-shot splits. Your timer becomes your training partner.

Warm-Up (5 min)

Draw Confirmation

  • 10 draws at your current comfortable par
  • All 10 should be clean — if not, you’re rushing

Skill Block A: Compressed Par Times (10 min)

Drill 1: Draw Par Reduction

  • Start at your current draw par time
  • Perform 3 reps
  • Drop par by 0.1 seconds
  • Perform 3 reps
  • Continue until you fail 2/3 reps
  • Record your “failure” par: _____ seconds
  • This is your target for next week

Drill 2: Reload Par Reduction

  • Same protocol as above with emergency reload
  • Record failure par: _____ seconds

Drill 3: Transition Par Reduction

  • Same protocol with 1-1 transition
  • Record failure par: _____ seconds

Skill Block B: Split Times (10 min)

Concept: Splits are the time between shots on the same target. Faster splits = faster overall time.

Drill 4: Controlled Pairs

  • At extension on target
  • On buzzer: dry fire twice
  • Target split: 0.4s (DEVELOPING), 0.25s (INTERMEDIATE), 0.18s (ADVANCED)
  • 15 reps

POST-PROGRAM: MAINTENANCE PROTOCOL

What Now?

You’ve completed 30 days of dedicated dry fire training. Your skills are sharper than when you started. But skills decay without maintenance.

Recommended Maintenance Schedule

Minimum Effective Dose: 15 minutes, 3x per week

DayFocusDay 1Pistol fundamentals (draw, reload, transitions)Day 2Rifle fundamentals (mount, reload, positions)Day 3Combined (transitions, short stage)

Weekly Standards Check

Once per week, run these cold:

  • Draw to first shot
  • Rifle ready-up
  • R-to-P transition

Track these times. If they start slipping, increase training volume.

Monthly Tune-Up

Once per month, run a 30-minute “Week 1” style session hitting all fundamentals. This prevents skill decay across less-practiced areas.

Pre-Match Preparation

Before any 2-gun match:

3 Days Before:

  • 30-minute session focusing on transitions
  • Multiple stage simulations

1 Day Before:

  • 15-minute session
  • Light fundamentals work
  • NO max-effort attempts (save them for match day)
  • Visualization of stage success

Match Day:

  • Brief handling drill (5 minutes) if space permits
  • Mental rehearsal during walkthrough
  • Trust your training

OPTIONAL: LIVE FIRE VALIDATION

When to Shoot Live

Dry fire builds mechanics. Live fire validates them.

Recommended Schedule:

  • Week 1: Live fire after Day 7 assessment (if possible)
  • Week 2: Live fire after Day 14 assessment
  • Week 3: Live fire after Day 21 assessment
  • Week 4: Live fire after Day 30 completion

Minimum Recommendation: At least ONE live fire session between Days 14-21.

Live Fire Validation Session (50-75 rounds per platform)

Pistol (50 rounds)

Warm-Up (10 rounds):

  • 5 shots, slow fire at 7 yards
  • 5 shots, slow fire at 15 yards

Standards (25 rounds):

  • Draw to first shot: 5 reps (5 rounds)
  • Bill Drill: 2 reps (12 rounds)
  • 1-1 Transition (2 shots): 4 reps (8 rounds)

Reload Validation (15 rounds):

  • Draw, 2, reload, 2: 3 reps (12 rounds)
  • Random reload during string: 3 rounds

Notes:

Compare live times to dry fire times. If live is significantly slower, mechanics may be breaking under recoil.

Rifle (50 rounds)

Warm-Up (10 rounds):

  • 5 shots prone at 50 yards (or max available distance)
  • 5 shots standing at 25 yards

Standards (30 rounds):

  • Ready-up to shot: 5 reps (5 rounds)
  • Rifle Bill Drill: 2 reps (12 rounds)
  • Transitions: 4 reps of 2 shots (8 rounds)
  • Kneeling: 5 shots

Reload Validation (10 rounds):

  • Shoot to bolt lock, reload, 1 shot: 5 reps (10 rounds)

Notes:

Transition Validation (15 rounds combined)

  • Rifle shot, transition, pistol shot: 5 reps (10 rounds total)
  • Pistol shot, transition, rifle shot: 5 reps (10 rounds total)

Compare to dry fire times.

CONGRATULATIONS

You’ve completed the 30-Day Off-Season Dry Fire Program.

You are now prepared to compete in 2-gun matches with:

  • ✓ Consistent pistol draw and presentation
  • ✓ Reliable rifle mount and ready positions
  • ✓ Fluid reloads on both platforms
  • ✓ Efficient platform transitions
  • ✓ Positional shooting fundamentals
  • ✓ Stage planning and execution ability
  • ✓ Measurable benchmarks proving your progress

What separates you from other competitors: You’ve put in 30 days of deliberate, structured practice. Most shooters only train when they shoot live. You’ve done hundreds — possibly thousands — more repetitions than they have.

Trust your training. Execute your plan. Enjoy the match.

Program designed for 2-gun competition preparation (PCSL, Tac2Gun). Always follow all firearm safety rules. Dry fire training should never replace fundamental firearms safety education.
