The MK V is JP’s answer to decades of their own compensator development — and it outperforms everything they’ve made before it, including the Recoil Eliminator that got itself banned from 3-Gun for being too effective. JP claims 30% more recoil reduction than that original design, and they got there by moving past traditional baffle-and-port layouts entirely. The MK V uses five individually tuned baffles shaped through gas flow modeling to capture and redirect nearly all of the muzzle gas, extending the deceleration window so the impulse feels smoother rather than just shorter.
For competitors, the practical result is a rifle that tracks flatter between shots and gets back on target faster. The comp fits within the standard 1″ x 3″ competition-legal profile, so it’s good to go for non-Open 3-Gun divisions, and most match rule sets that restrict muzzle device dimensions. It ships with a JP Double Crush Washer for straightforward installation, and JP recommends seating the muzzle about a quarter inch into the barrel nut to form a gas cup that feeds directly into the baffles.
It’s loud — that’s unavoidable with any comp this effective. Worth it for what it does to your splits.

The JP MK V Competition Compensator is a five-baffle muzzle device designed to deliver more recoil reduction than any previous JP comp — including the original Recoil Eliminator that competition organizers had to ban from non-Open divisions for being too effective. JP developed the MK V using advanced gas flow modeling to shape each of the five baffles individually, capturing and redirecting nearly all available muzzle gas rather than just deflecting it off flat surfaces.
The design grew out of the John Paul Signature Series limited-run welded brakes released in 2024. JP spent another year refining the manufacturing to bring the same performance into a production compensator. The result is a comp that extends the deceleration window for a smoother recoil impulse, keeps the muzzle neutral through the shot, and gets you back on target faster.
It fits within the 1″ x 3″ dimensional rule used across most competitive shooting organizations, making it legal for USPSA Limited, 3-Gun Tactical, and similar rule sets. The comp installs on standard 1/2-28 threaded barrels and ships with a JP Double Crush Washer. For best performance, JP recommends recessing the muzzle about a quarter inch into the barrel nut to create a gas cup that feeds expanding gas forward into the baffles.
The exit bore is sized for .223/5.56 but can be opened up to accommodate larger calibers with a minimum of .040″ over bore diameter.
