King Competition Gen 7 8 Round Shotgun Shell Holder

// Quick Overview

King Competition Gen 7 8-round shotgun shell holder (ASSM8) with magnetic retention and self-leveling shell units. Lighter polymer backing plate and the redesigned Gen 7 mounting adapter, included. Fits standard 12-gauge 2-3/4″ shells. Right or left hand grip. Tek-Lok or ELS hardware sold separately. Made in Finland.

This is what I run. I've had up to three King Competition 8-round caddies across my belt at every multigun match since I first reviewed them, and the magnetic retention has proven itself every time. Shells lock in tight and release with a clean, consistent pull. Of every caddy I've tested, the King delivers the smoothest release without sacrificing retention strength. Most caddies trade one for the other. The King does both.

Each shell unit is independently self-leveling, which means you can switch between birdshot, buckshot, and slugs without adjusting anything. The spring tension is tunable by rotating the main bolt if you want to dial it in, but the factory setting handles all standard 12-gauge 2-3/4" competition shells out of the box.

The skeleton construction is rigid and curved on an angled axis to wrap around your waist. The 8-round version keeps the shell positions high relative to the belt mount, which I appreciate after dealing with uncomfortable edge dig from other caddies when crouching. Shells are staggered for your grip hand, so order the correct variation (Right or Left) based on which hand you grab shells with.

The trade-off is price. A full three-caddy belt setup is an investment before mounting hardware. But if your shotgun loading is the weakest part of your match performance, this is where the money should go. My match time is on Gen 6; the Gen 7 changes are the backing plate and the adapter, and the retention system is the same.

Description

The King Competition Gen 7 is the current version of the 8-round magnetic shotgun shell holder designed and built in Finland by IPSC world champions. Shells sit inside the skeleton frame and are held by magnets; a short straight pull releases them completely, with no friction to drag against. Each 4-shell unit self-levels on its own, so birdshot, buckshot, and slugs in standard 12-gauge 2-3/4″ hulls all sit at the same grab height without adjustment. Spring tension and travel can be fine-tuned at the main bolt if you want to change it, but the factory setting covers standard competition loads.

What changed from Gen 6: the backing plate is now a lighter high-strength polymer, and the mounting adapter was redesigned for more strength and a wider adjustment range. The adapter and its two M5 mounting screws are in the box, so a Blade-Tech Tek-Lok or Safariland ELS receiver is the only extra hardware needed to get it on a belt. Assembly weight is 266 g. The backing plate is curved on an angled axis to follow your waist, shells are staggered for a right or left hand grab (choose the grip when ordering), and the spacing supports quad loads, dual loads, or any mix.

Fitment: Standard 12-gauge 2-3/4″ competition shells. Not intended for 3″ shells. Mounts to a belt through the included Gen 7 adapter with a Tek-Lok or ELS (sold separately), or directly through the skeleton links with M6 screws. The skeleton frame without an adapter complies with the IPSC 75 mm rule; mounting through a Tek-Lok or ELS may exceed 75 mm from the belt, so check your division rules before running an adapter in IPSC.

Who it’s for

3-Gun, multigun, and IPSC shotgun competitors running tube-fed guns who load by quads or twins and want retention that holds through movement without a heavy release.

Who should skip it

If you want a lower-cost caddy for occasional shotgun stages, the Carbon Arms 8 Round Shot Shell Holder uses clip retention at a lower price. If you want a lighter rig with more capacity, the King Competition Carbon 12 Round weighs less than this 8-round despite holding four more shells.
