System Notes
Gas block, carrier, spring. These three are one system. Carrier mass and spring weight decide how much gas the action needs, and the gas block supplies exactly that. Changing one means re-checking the other two. The Silent Captured Spring comes in standard (2.9 oz), H2 (4.8 oz), and H3 (5.6 oz). Pairing a low mass carrier with the heavier weights works against the carrier. The tuning process is covered in gas system tuning for competition, and the failure side in AR-15 short stroking.
Barrel and hand guard. The 12.5 inch hand guard only makes sense because the barrel is 13.5 inches. On a 16 inch barrel the equivalent is a 15 inch hand guard.
Optic pair and zeros. A 200 yard zero on the primary keeps holdover out of the picture until past 200. A 25 yard zero on the dot matches its close-range job. The offset geometry is covered in shooting a canted rifle. The primary optic has its own write-up in the Vortex Razor HD Gen III 1-10×24 review.
A barrel under 16 inches on a firearm with a stock is a short-barreled rifle under the NFA unless a muzzle device is permanently attached to bring it to 16 inches or longer. Permanent means pinned and welded, blind pinned, or high-temperature silver soldered. The pin and weld has to be done before the upper goes on a stocked lower. Have it done as part of the build.
Service Record
| Item | Record |
|---|---|
| Round count | About 8,000 through the 2026 season |
| Parts failures | 0 |
| Stoppages | 2 failures to eject. Cause both times: rifle run dry with questionable ammunition. Fixed with lubrication |
| Full cleaning | Every couple of years, or after weather exposure |
| Between matches | Lubrication only |
| SCS o-rings | Replaced periodically, preventive |
| Bolt gas ring | Replaced periodically, preventive |
| Hardest environment | Dry Texas heat with wind-blown red silt. Silt mixed with oil on the carrier acts as a polishing compound |
Known Limitations and Revision Path
Barrel length. Built again today, this would be a 16 inch barrel with a 15 inch hand guard. The 13.5 inch length was chosen for handling on 2021 courses of fire. The Tactical Games has pushed targets farther out since, and velocity is where this rifle comes up short.
Muzzle device. A revision would pin a flash hider that accepts a quick-attach suppressor, so the option exists without committing to it.
Everything else would be repeated.
Fit
Built for: The Tactical Games, tactical 2-Gun, and multigun where close targets and distance are mixed, the rifle is carried as much as it is shot, and the owner is willing to tune a gas system.
Wrong for:
- Any rule set that allows a compensator. Build around the comp instead. See best compensators for competition AR-15s.
- Shooters who need field-serviceable simplicity. The captured spring is sealed. Carry a spare or run a standard buffer.
- Shooters who run a rifle dirty. Swap the low mass carrier for a full mass carrier and re-tune.
- A first competition rifle. The money does more as ammunition and a shot timer.
Lineage
| Rifle | Status | Why it was replaced in this role |
|---|---|---|
| 2019: 16 in JP-15, PSC-11 side charge, competition contour | Superseded in this role | About 9.5 lb. Too heavy to carry slung for a full TTG event |
| 2020: 10.5 in, suppressor pinned to 16 in | Retired | Suppressor mirage made the sight picture unusable. Burn risk on the clock |
| 2021: 14.5 in ultralight, JP M-LOK hand guard | Superseded in this role | Front end too light for recoil control |
FAQ
What should a first Tactical Games rifle weigh?
Lighter than your 3-Gun rifle. In 3-Gun you shoot a stage in 30 to 45 seconds. In The Tactical Games you carry the rifle slung for 10 to 12 minutes or longer, with your heart rate up, before you shoot it. My first TTG rifle was a 9.5 pound 3-Gun build, and the weight was the whole problem.
Should I run a suppressor at The Tactical Games?
I tried it and moved away from it. Mirage off a hot can made the sight picture unusable, no heat shroud fixed it, and it burned me more than once. Add the slowed cycling, the back pressure, and the gas in your face, and it was a liability on the clock.
Why pin a muzzle device to a 13.5 inch barrel instead of running 16 inches?
Handling around barricades and ports, and balance. Pinning a device to reach 16 inches keeps the rifle out of SBR territory without the paperwork. The cost is that the device becomes permanent, so decide before the barrel ships.
Does a low mass bolt carrier hurt reliability?
Not in my experience, as long as the gas is tuned to it and the rifle stays lubricated. Mine has run about 8,000 rounds across bulk 55 grain and match 69 grain. The only stoppages came from running it dry with questionable ammo. If you plan to run a rifle dirty, a full mass carrier gives you more margin.
What does the JP Silent Captured Spring do?
It replaces the buffer and spring with a captured assembly on a guide rod, so the spring never contacts the buffer tube. That removes the spring noise and the rattle you feel through your cheek. It changes feel and consistency. It does not reduce recoil.
Why run an offset red dot with a 1-10x LPVO?
Speed in positions the primary optic’s eye box won’t tolerate, and speed when your heart rate is high coming off a physical event. Rolling the rifle to a 45 degree dot is faster than hunting an eye box or changing magnification on the clock. Mine is zeroed at 25 yards.
What are the SL-1 and SL-3 levers on the safety?
Two profiles of JP’s selector lever. SL-1 is standard height, SL-3 is ultra low profile. Running one of each keeps a full-size lever under the firing thumb while the opposite side stays clear of the trigger finger.
Would you build this same rifle again in 2026?
Not identically. I’d go to a 16 inch barrel with a 15 inch hand guard for the velocity and the performance at distance. TTG has been pushing its ranges out since 2021. Everything else on the rifle I’d repeat.
