Description

The Timney Alpha Competition for the Ruger RXM brings Timney’s Glock trigger design to Ruger’s Glock-pattern pistol. The RXM uses a removable Fire Control Insert (FCI), and Timney built the Alpha RXM to go into that insert: Timney states it “features a snap-in housing for easy installation” and is “compatible with STOCK Ruger RXM pistols.” It replaces the factory trigger shoe, trigger bar and sear housing; the FCI, frame and slide stay as they came from Ruger. Timney lists it for competition use, and says it is “hand-assembled, tested, and calibrated.” Installing it means pulling the FCI, driving the trigger pins, swapping the assembly and reassembling; a Shoot On install article used a 3/32 flat punch, a small hammer and a bench block and noted the pins fit tightly.

Timney lists a 3 pound pull weight and calls the trigger “non-adjustable,” so there is no over-travel or pre-travel screw to fiddle with. The shoe is a straight, flat face anodized aluminum trigger in red, with a red safety blade in the center of the face. The trigger bar and sear are Teflon nickel coated, the same treatment Timney uses on the Glock Alphas. Timney does not publish pre-travel or reset distances; the Shoot On article measured about 0.142 inch of take-up and about 0.233 inch of reset on its sample, both shorter than factory. That same article reports two trigger return springs in the box, a light gray and a heavier red, and confirms the trigger safety blade still blocks rearward movement when installed. Timney’s page does not state safety retention in its own words, so check the blade, the firing pin safety plunger and the drop safety function yourself after installation, before live fire.

Fitment: Ruger RXM 9mm pistols with the factory Fire Control Insert, in any factory frame color or Magpul grip module. It will NOT fit any Glock, even though the RXM is Glock-pattern; Timney’s Glock Alphas are separate parts, and the RXM housing is built for Ruger’s FCI. It will NOT fit the RXM if the FCI has been swapped for an aftermarket fire control unit or fitted with aftermarket trigger parts; Timney states stock RXM pistols only. An aftermarket RXM slide or barrel does not affect the trigger.

Who it’s for

RXM owners shooting USPSA Carry Optics or Limited Optics with the factory optic cut, and anyone running an RXM in PCSL, steel or Tactical Games who wants a lighter, cleaner break than the factory trigger. Pairs well with the threaded barrels we carry for the RXM if you are building an Open or PCSL gun.

Who should skip it

This does not fit any Glock; if you shoot a Glock, pick the Alpha for your generation and frame size from the other Timney pages here. A 3 pound striker-fired trigger is a range and competition trigger, not a carry trigger; many instructors say no to anything under factory weight on a defensive gun, and Timney lists the Alpha for competition. If your RXM is a carry gun, the factory trigger is the milder option. USPSA Production and Carry Optics allow aftermarket triggers, bars, connectors and springs with no minimum pull weight, as long as the trigger safety still works and the pistol is on the approved list; Limited, Limited Optics and Open have no trigger rules. IDPA SSP allows internal trigger work but no visible external changes, so an aftermarket shoe is out; IDPA ESP, CCP and CO allow replacement triggers but not add-on trigger shoes. Check that the RXM is on the USPSA Production and IDPA lists before you count on those divisions. Read the current rulebook before a major.
