Description

The Samson Pocket Comp is a small compensator contoured to the Smith and Wesson M&P Shield slide. Samson built it for concealed carry, so the goal was less muzzle rise in a package that still fits in a pocket or a holster cut for a comped Shield. Instead of threading the comp body directly onto the barrel, Samson uses what it calls a “unique muzzle adapter”: a nut that threads onto the 1/2×28 barrel and protects the threads, with the comp fastened to that adapter. Launch coverage from Samson describes hex screws securing the comp to the nut, and Samson says the adapter stays on as a thread protector when the comp is off. Samson calls it a “no-gunsmithing, easy installation/removal” and posts an installation PDF and video. A 1/2×28 threaded 9mm Shield barrel is required and not included; the Faxon threaded barrels we carry for the Shield and Shield Plus are the matching parts.

Samson machines the Pocket Comp from 7075 aluminum with a MIL-A-8625 Type III Class 2 hard-coat anodized finish in black. It measures 1.15 inches long and 0.85 inch wide and weighs 1.2 ounces. Samson does not publish a port count. On ammunition, Samson states the comp “functions with factory recoil spring using a wide range of bullet weights and velocities,” recommends 124 grain or heavier, and says 115 grain “may work depending on manufacturer and/or environmental conditions.” That is a useful honest note: if your practice ammo is light 115 grain, test it before you rely on it.

Fitment: Samson lists the M&P9 Shield, M&P9 Shield M2.0, and M&P9 Shield Plus, all 9mm, with a 1/2×28 threaded barrel. Samson does not list the Shield .40 or Shield .45, and the comp is contoured to the Shield slide, so it is not a general purpose 1/2×28 comp for other pistols. It will not fit a Shield with the factory unthreaded barrel or a Performance Center ported barrel without threads. Holsters molded to a stock Shield will not close over it.

Matching threaded barrels: Faxon Match Series Straight Fluted Threaded Barrel (S&W M&P Shield and Shield Plus, 9mm, 1/2×28, Black Nitride).

Who it’s for

Shield, Shield M2.0, and Shield Plus owners with a threaded barrel who carry the gun and want a comp that runs on the stock spring. Compensators are allowed in USPSA Limited Optics and Open, PCSL 2-Gun, and Tactical Games; a Shield Plus is also a natural fit for the Backup Gun or micro-compact matches that allow comps.

Who should skip it

If you shoot a Shield .40 or .45, Samson does not list this comp for those pistols. If you shoot a full-size M&P 2.0 or want a round comp that moves between pistols, the Griffin Micro Carry Comp or True Precision Cobra fit any 1/2×28 barrel. The Faxon EXOS for the Shield is the other slide-matched option in this batch. USPSA Production and Carry Optics do not allow compensators or threaded barrels with a device attached, and IDPA SSP and CO do not allow comps; IDPA CCP and ESP rules vary, so check the rulebook.
