The Master Gun Vise does one thing that standard bench vises can’t: it lets you reposition your work to any angle without unclamping and starting over. The 360-degree ball joint with a friction clamp handles general work, and the Torq-Lok pin locks the joint solid for high-torque tasks like barrel nut installation (rated to 100 ft-lb). The reversible jaw sleeves give you a grooved side for rails and barrels and a padded side for finished surfaces.
Where it really pays off for competitors is the accessory ecosystem. The Lug-Lok upper vise block and Smart-Fit lower block turn it into a purpose-built AR workstation for builds, optic mounting, and match-day fixes. The built-in leveling knob simplifies scope mounting when paired with a level.
The trade-off is price – around $300 before accessories. If you’re only cleaning guns once or twice a year, a basic Tipton vise does the job. But if you’re building, maintaining, and prepping competition guns regularly, this earns its bench space.

The Real Avid Master Gun Vise is a bench-mount vise built specifically for firearms work. It replaces the combination of a standard bench vise, wood blocks, and improvised padding that most of us have been using to hold guns during maintenance and builds.
The defining feature is the articulating ball and socket joint at the base, which allows 360-degree repositioning without removing the firearm from the jaws. A friction clamp holds the position for general work. For high-torque applications like barrel nut installation or castle nut work, the Torq-Lok pin locks the ball joint into one of eight positions and handles up to 100 ft-lb.
The jaws come with reversible Gun-Fit sleeves — a grooved nylon side for positive grip on Picatinny rails, barrels, and bolt carriers, and a padded side for compression grip on finished surfaces without marring. Four dual-purpose locking pins secure the sleeves and also anchor the Lug-Lok upper vise block (sold separately). A built-in leveling knob provides ±3 degrees of micro-adjustment for scope mounting and optic leveling.
The vise mounts to any workbench with three bolts (included). Note that the friction clamp assembly extends below the bench surface and may interfere with drawers depending on your bench layout — measure before drilling.
