Description
The Geissele Reaction Rod is the tool that replaced upper receiver vise blocks for most AR-15 armorers. You clamp the rod in a bench vise, slide the upper receiver over it, and splines on the rod engage the locking lugs in the barrel extension. All the torque from a barrel nut, muzzle device, or handguard goes straight into the barrel extension instead of through the receiver. That means no crushed receiver, no sheared index pin, and no marred finish.
It is machined from 4140 chrome moly steel and ground to a smooth, straight diameter. It works horizontally or vertically in the vise, and you can leave optics and rails on the upper while you work. Fits AR-15 and M4 pattern 5.56/.223 uppers, and Geissele notes it also fits the HK MR556. For .308 pattern rifles you need the 7.62 version.
Heads up: The rod indexes on the barrel extension, so it needs a barrel installed in the upper. It will not help you if you are starting from a bare receiver with no barrel.

Who it’s for
Anyone who builds or rebarrels their own AR-15s, swaps muzzle devices, or installs free-float rails. If you own more than one AR and a torque wrench, this pays for itself the first time you do not crack a receiver.
Who should skip it
If you only need to time a muzzle device once a year, a set of clamshell upper vise blocks costs less and works, just with more risk to the receiver. AR-10 and .308 builders need the Geissele Reaction Rod 7.62 version, which uses larger splines.
