Description

The GrovTec pistol thread protector is a plain steel cap for 1/2×28 pistol barrel threads. GrovTec lists it for aftermarket 9mm barrels, and it threads on by hand to cover the muzzle threads when no suppressor or compensator is mounted. There is nothing to fit; spin it on until it seats against the barrel shoulder.

GrovTec describes it as one-piece steel construction with a black oxide finish, and dealers note the knurling gives a non-slip grip for removal without tools. GrovTec lists it at .415 in long, which is short enough to stay within the thread length of a pistol barrel. One thing to know: black oxide is a thin finish, so expect it to wear at the knurl edges over time, and there is no O-ring, so check it after a few magazines on a hard-recoiling gun.

Fitment: any pistol barrel threaded 1/2×28 right hand, including aftermarket 9mm barrels from True Precision, Faxon, SilencerCo and others, and factory threaded 9mm and 22 LR pistols. It will not fit 1/2×36, M13.5×1 LH, 5/8×24 or 9/16×24 threads. GrovTec’s page does not list an outside diameter that we can confirm, so if you need a cap flush with a specific barrel profile, measure first.

Who it’s for

Anyone buying a threaded barrel that ships without a cap, such as the Faxon Shield barrel in this batch, or who wants a cheap spare for a range bag. It also suits USPSA Production and Carry Optics shooters who have to run a threaded barrel bare.

Who should skip it

If you want a lighter cap in a color, or a knurl with more grip, the Backup Tactical Frag thread protector we carry is 7075 aluminum in black and other anodized colors. If your barrel already came with a manufacturer’s O-ring protector, such as the True Precision Hellcat or P-10 C barrels, you do not need this one. Rifle shooters with 1/2×28 on a 223 barrel should look for a rifle-length protector instead.
